Bridge Watch Rating North (BWR-N)

The Western Arctic Marine Training Centre (WAMTC) is proud to offer BWR-N twice a year, running in fall and winter.  Applications are accepted year round.

The 16-week BWR-N program is FULLY FUNDED by Transport Canada through the Oceans Protection plan in collaboration with the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT).

Most of the training is done at WAMTC’s Hay River, NWT campus. Some training may be offered in community when possible.

Eligibility Requirements:

Applicants are chosen from northern residents who are over the age of 17 and are Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents.

Prerequisites & How to Obtain Them:

  • Grades of 50% or Higher  in one of English 30-1, English 30-2, English 30, English 33
    AND
  • Grades of 50% or Higher in one of Math 20-1, Math 20-2, Math 20-3, Pure Math 20, Applied Math 20, Math 20, Math 23
    • To receive a NWT Validation Statement (also called “unofficial transcript” of your grades), contact ECE’s Student Records department by email at student_records@gov.nt.ca or by phone at (867) 767-9353 extension 71271. You will receive your information by email.
      NOTE: If the validation statement/unofficial transcript is not available, or if you do not meet the minimum academic requirements, you are eligible for free assessment testing and/or upgrading to meet the academic prerequisites.
  • Government-issued Photo ID (e.g. driver’s license, passport, status card, etc.)
      • Scan the ID OR take a clear photo with your phone and email to info@wamtc.ca.
  • Criminal Records Check
    • Visit your local RCMP or police detachment and ask for a Criminal Records Check. You will need to provide two pieces of ID, one of which must be a government-issued photo ID that includes your name, date of birth, and signature (e.g. driver’s license, passport, status card, etc.).
  • Transport Canada Candidate Document Number (CDN)
    • Download the fillable CDN Application Form found here, collect specified documents (see note below) and email the collection to pnrmarine-administration-maritimepnr@tc.gc.ca. You will receive your CDN by email within a few days.
      NOTE: If you are missing the required pieces, please contact info@wamtc.ca for identification notarization.
  • Medical Certificate from a Transport Canada-approved medical examiner, indicating fitness for deck duty and lookout duties
    • Medical exams will be arranged for the first week of classes, to be completed in Hay River.
      NOTE: You need a CDN to complete the medical exam
  • British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) Student ID Number
      • Visit bcit.ca/apply, click “Create BCIT ID” and fill in the requested information

What Costs are Covered?

The following BWR-N program-related expenses are covered at no expense to the student:
  • Tuition
  • Course Materials & Supplies
  • Living Allowance
  • Flight Costs for Travel for BCIT Training
  • Students who attend any part of training from out of town will be provided with accommodations and meal Per Diems
  • Books & Manuals
  • Medical Exam Cost
  • Lunch Each In-Class Day
  • Transit Pass in BC

What Costs are NOT Covered?

General living expenses that are not program-related are NOT covered, including:
  • Mortgage or Rent at Home
  • Mobile or Home Phone
  • Home Internet
  • Extended Health and Dental
  • Vehicle Payments, Insurance, Repairs, Gas, Parking, Speeding/Parking Tickets
  • Financial Support For Child, Elder, or Pet Care
